Brøderbund scored an early hit sustaining a punt Galactic Empire, written by Doug Carlston for the TRS-80. the company went in to be a powerhouse in the training & amusement computer software markets by having titles prefer Fantavision, Choplifter, Lode Runner, Karateka, Wings of Fury, Prince of Persia, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, and Myst, which stayed in the top 10 listings of PC games for years. Brøderbund too distributed a Print Shop series of desktop greeting card making programs. Broderbund was when the Nintendo licensee, publishing a few games games for the Nintendo Entertainment System, but none of their NES games including their long instance franchises Lode Runner, Spelunker and Raid on Bungling Bay, were developed by Broderbund themselves for this system.
Corporate history
Brøderbund was founded by brothers Doug and Gary Carlston in 1980. Their sister, Cathy, joined a year later. Prior to founding a company, Doug was a lawyer and Gary had held the total of jobs, including teaching Swedish at an American college.
Brøderbund became a public company in 1991 (their NASDAQ symbol, no hanker operative, was BROD). Their index price & market capitalisation climbed steadily to the utmost of about USD$80/share in late 1995, and then fell steadily in the face of continued losses for the total of years.
Brøderbund was purchased by The Learning Company in 1998 for about USD$420 million in commodity. Around 1999 the combined company was bought by Mattel for the astounding sum of $3.6 billion. Etymology
